Sol System
From UNICOMP, the Universal Compendium
The Sol System is composed of one star, Sol, and eight planets. They are:
It contains an extremely dense asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. The inner planets are reached via the "Great Gate", which is a long tunnel from Jupiter to the Mars shipyards, and takes one day to fully travel at fastest sublight speed. It also serves as a defense mechanism for the inner planets, most notably Earth.
In addition to the Mars Asteroid Belt, the Sol System is home to another debris field with much larger objects, but which is much less dense. This field is known as the Kuiper Belt, and starts within the orbit of Neptune (30 AU) and extends to about 50 AU from Sol. Comets are believed to form in this region.
The furthest area of the Sol System is known as the Oort Cloud, which exists in the range of 50,000 AU to 100,000 AU from Sol. It is a remnant of the original nebula which created the system.
