Johnathan Matthews has yet to behold the true wonders of the Galaxy. A small farmer from Ohio, Matthews became an entrant at the United States Naval Academy rather than sign up directly to the United Nations Space Command (UNSC) or the even larger United Federation of Planets. Avoiding being thrown into a war without training, his service at the Naval Academy earned him a position as a help officer on the recon ship Detlam, and eventually came to serve aboard the Federation ship USS Enterprise-E under Jean-Luc Picard.

His experience aboard the Enterprise was short lived, however, when he disobeyed orders and flew a T-26 Firehawk into battle against Shr'sa pirates. His goals were pure, and he was not dismissed from service. Picard had sent him off to serve on the Corscan Inner Rim fending off smugglers and pirates.

After leaving the rim, he journeyed to the Republic-held planet of Mon Calimari. He joined a new-found friend Benjamin Sika in defending the world from a sudden Imperial incursion during the early years of the Imperial Wars, fighting as a civilian rather than as an officer. He received commendation nevertheless, and when the Republic fell, he immediately returned to active duty with the UNSC and was stationed aboard the USS Minnesota.

For the remainder of the war he participated as a pilot, mainly flying with the various squadrons of the USS Corellia and eventually became a candidate for the legendary Hide Squadron group under Commander James George. Following the end of the war, he grew tired of his stations aboard ships that mainly explored and patrolled regions of space, and became more of a off-duty push-pilot for the Alliance when called to serve. He mainly stays toward the unexplored regions of the Milky Way, but makes the journey back to Earth often to see friends and family.
