[edit] Plot Synopsis
The story opens with the two galaxies of Corscan and Milky Way embroiled in a massive war against a resurgent Empire under the leadership of the mysterious dictator Vincent Calrissian. Under Calrissian's leadership, this new, more powerful force of evil was able to route the New Republic, the government of the Corscan Galaxy, and forced the retreat of those in and allied with the Republic into the Milky Way. Governed by the United Federation of Planets, The Milky Way provided the Republic with adequate protection from the Empire until the opening of the book, where the Empire begins its assault on the Milky Way. This alliance of governments, known as the Universal Alliance of Independent Systems, now prepares for its defense of the Milky Way.
