Earth is the third planet in the Sol System. It is the homeworld of the Humans, sometimes referred to as Terrans, who would go on to explore much of the Milky Way Galaxy*.

Earth has a 77% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen atmosphere, with trace elements of other gases mixed in. Over two thirds of the planet is covered in water, while most of the remaining land has been developed into cities.

Earth has one moon, Luna. Also in orbit around the planet is a thin layer of debris, leftover from various space missions during the 20th, 21st and 22nd centuries, as well as several hundred thousand communication arrays, resource refineries, habitat preservations, docks, outposts, science facilities, and a number of other establishments. Finally, orbiting Earth is the Washington Citadel, the seat of the head of the Universal Alliance. The citadel, which has a geosynchronous orbit above Washington D.C. in the United States of America, is where the head of the Alliance, the Supreme Allied Commander and the Universal Tribune, oversees the Alliance and its operation.

On Earth is the location of the headquarters for Starfleet, The United Nations, and the United Federation of Planets, three of the original entities to explore the galaxy outside of the Sol System. The United Nations is currently the governing body of the planet's natural habitants, the Earth Humans, but the United Federation of planets is the primary government of The Milky Way Galaxy.

∗: Technically speaking, the Milky Way Galaxy has yet to be fully explored. Only about 48% of the galaxy has been charted, and even most of that has yet to be fully explored. Numerous space phenomena have been discovered in the galaxy (thousands more than any found in other galaxies) and lead current scientists to believe the galaxy is one that shares extra-dimensional properties. Previous entrances to places such as Fluidic Space and The Terresact have been cited as locations in the galaxy but not able to be traveled to due to lack of physical coordinates in this dimension. This phenomenon has not been observed in any galaxy other than the Milky Way.
